Jesus said that apart from Him, we can do nothing, but He was not talking about worldly success or achievement. He was talking about life itself, the kind of deep, lasting, complete life that the world simply cannot manufacture. The key word in John 15 is "remain." Our job is not to strive and produce, but to stay connected to Jesus the way a branch stays connected to a vine. When we remain in Him, He produces fruit in us that we could never produce on our own. That fruit includes love, joy, peace, and the kind of unshakeable joy that Jesus Himself carried all the way to the cross. Jesus perfectly remained in the Father's love for us so that we could remain in Him. The invitation is simple but costly: stop settling for a living and choose life.
